Port of Duisburg reports drop in volumes

The Port of Duisburg has reported a drop in total goods handling in 2019.

In 2019, container handling volumes at Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport), reached approximately 4.0 million teu, compared to 4.1 million teu in 2018.

With a share of around 60 percent, container handling is duisport’s most important business segment. Total goods handling is expected to decline from 65.3 million tonnes to approximately 61.1 million tonnes (-4.2 million tonnes).

Erich Staake, chief executive officer, duisport, commented: “The exit from coal, the continued crisis in the steel sector, the uncertain political environment associated with the energy transformation, the challenges of digitisation and the apparent economic downturn – all these factors are akin to a second structural transformation for the entire North Rhine Westphalia region.”

Staake added: “The diversified business model of Duisburger Hafen AG is well-equipped for these challenges. But even a company as prepared as ours cannot buck a progressively deteriorating trend in the long term,” concludes duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake with regard to the preliminary analysis of the handling statistics for the year 2019.”
