Luka Koper, the port authority of Koper, Slovenia, has started works for the extension of the southern part of its container pier.
The first phase of the project consists a quay extension of 98.50 m. Scheduled to be completed in March 2021, the project will bring the total length of the quay to 695.00 m. In the second phase, 2.5 hectares additional stacking areas for containers will be constructed until 2022.
In combination, the two construction projects will increase the design capacity of the Koper Container Terminal from 1.00 to 1.30 Mteu annually. Together with the optimization of various terminal process- es, Luka Koper says that container capacity is expected to increase further to 1.50 Mteu per year.
The value of the investment is EUR 45.6 million, partially co-financed by the European Union. Luka Koper had already obtained planning per- mission for the works in 2019 as part of a wider EUR 235 million port up- grade program .
